Are you interested in learning how to make the classroom more inclusive for first generation and non-traditional college students? In this workshop, we will explore approaches to inclusive teaching, focusing on experiences of this diverse and growing student population. We will supplement a discussion of inclusive teaching practices in the context of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) with stories from first-generation, low-income, and non-traditional students, as well as literature-supported strategies to enhance the learning experience for these students. Further, we will discuss the hidden curriculum in higher education and strategies to make classrooms more accessible to all students. Better understanding the experiences of first generation and non-traditional students will help us develop a set of best practices for creating an educational environment designed for all students to succeed.
