Have you struggled in the past with knowing how to approach conversations around traumatic content in your classroom? Are you unsure how to think about supporting student learning in a moment when many are experiencing personal and shared trauma? This ATW will explore conversations around trauma-informed teaching, keeping an eye on how theories of trauma and learning guide our teaching practices in the specific context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic while also discussing the ways trauma-informed teaching can help better inform and develop our standard teaching practices. We will explore the published literature on trauma and education, discuss how to responsibly and safely facilitate student conversations around potentially triggering content, and think about the ways trauma-informed teaching should be part of the foundation of creating and maintaining any safe, productive and effective classroom.
