Event Description

With the semester nearly half over, research paper due dates are coming up fast. If you feel you could use some guidance on writing your academic paper, we invite you to join us for the GWL’s four-part series on Academic Writing Skills and Strategies. This series, will address: critically reading scholarly works and effectively taking notes; synthesizing your scholarly research; building your argument, and attribution in academic papers.. . Register for the series or any workshop of interest to you.

Part 1 (Mar. 15): Critical Reading and Interactive Notetaking Strategies. In this workshop, we will cover tips for selecting appropriate resources, the process of reading and evaluating your sources, and effectively taking notes.

Part 2 (Mar. 29): Literature Synthesis. Synthesizing literature can be challenging as you work to find connections among various sources and to articulate general principles from a number of authorities. This workshop will teach you how to synthesize your wealth of sources and avoid unconnected analyses.

Part 3 (Apr. 5): Building Your Argument. We will cover structuring an argument, supporting an argument with reasons and evidence, and addressing opposing arguments. Activities during the workshop will give you an opportunity to apply the skills and techniques we discuss.

Part 4 (Apr. 12) Attribution in Academic Writing. In this interactive workshop we’ll discuss when and how to cite, including best practices when summarizing, paraphrasing, and using quotes. We will engage in exercises and discuss ambiguous scenarios so that you will leave with the information you need to correctly attribute your sources.
