Event Description

Dr. B. Afeni McNeely Cobham, Associate Dean of Institutional Equity and Inclusion at Connecticut College, will host a workshop at 10 a.m. in CTL 120A. Participants are invited for light snacks during the workshop.

Session Description: Discussions about race, identity, and culture often occur as a reaction to polarizing socio-political incidents or in fields of study that historically examine and unpack group identities. Watt (2007) describes these types of discussions as ‘difficult dialogues,’ [where] one is being encouraged to reflect on their social, political, and economic position in society. This session will introduce participants to best practices in facilitating difficult dialogues in the classroom and in co-curricular spaces through concepts of popular culture. Participants will also examine the benefits of fostering cultural literacy and competence.
