Session Description: During this presentation, Dr. Pande will summarize her research on the links between gender norms and women’s work in India. Norms regarding appropriate behavior for women play a key role in influencing women’s work outcomes in rural India. While an explicit acceptance of similar gender norms has largely disappeared in the U.S., Dr. Pande will discuss how recent evidence suggests that gender-biased beliefs regarding appropriate roles for women continues to shape women’s career trajectories in the U.S.
