While international students bring valuable perspectives and experiences to the classroom, they may also encounter academic and socio-cultural barriers shaped by unfamiliar institutional norms, language differences, and the hidden curriculum. In this Intermediate Teaching Workshop (ITW), we will examine common challenges international students face, reflect on how cultural and institutional differences can affect classroom interactions, and consider factors that influence student success at Yale and other U.S. institutions. Participants will explore Universal Design for Learning, discuss case studies, and develop concrete strategies for making course expectations, participation, and assessment practices more transparent, flexible, equitable, and inclusive. We welcome instructors with prior experience teaching international students, as well as those who are new to working with internationally diverse classrooms.
