Online instruction is an increasingly important part of modern teaching practice, but requires a somewhat different set of skills and tools to in-person instruction. In this ATW, we will consider the nature of remote teaching and the challenges of teaching online, and share with participants tools and best practices for effective online instruction. We will discuss how equitable practices such as Universal Design for Learning can enable instructors to better meet access needs, examine evidence-based efficacy of digital teaching, and investigate the breadth of available instructional platforms. We will pay special attention to the question of building community in the online classroom. Please note: Advanced Teaching Workshops (ATWs) count toward the requirements for the Certificate of College Teaching Preparation (CCTP). ATWs are designed as deeper dives into a given topic, and are especially appropriate for participants with prior experience.
