Event Description

How can we as instructors promote thoughtful and productive discussions in the classroom? How do we avoid those awkward moments when no one talks, or navigate difficult conversations? In this workshop, we will identify the components of an effective discussion across the disciplines, highlight how different fields or classroom settings may utilize discussions, and introduce strategies for encouraging dynamic conversations. You’ll walk away with concrete tools for starting and shaping discussions, preparing your class structure and assignments to build in quality discussion, insight on factors that may influence classroom dynamics, and resources for how to navigate the more difficult moments of facilitation. For more information, please contact Emily Theus (emily.theus@yale.edu) and Rachel Wilson (rachel.wilson@yale.edu).

Please note: Intermediate Teaching Workshops (ITWs) count toward the requirements for the Certificate of College Teaching Preparation (CCTP). They do not presuppose any previous engagement with the topic, but will draw on topics mentioned in the Fundamentals of Teaching/the CIRTL MOOC. For a refresher on key pedagogical terms you may have encountered in the Fundamentals or the CIRTL MOOC, please refer to our glossary: tinyurl.com/PedagogicalGlossary.
