Event Description

Multiple studies have shown that mentors and mentoring support play a critical role in a researcher’s personal and professional development. However, lab mentoring can be a challenging process. What pedagogical and mentoring strategies should we employ to support the mentee’s research journey? In this 2-part ITW (Intermediate Teaching Workshop), we will discuss how to establish clear mentor-mentee expectations, support mentee career/research goals, and facilitate personal independence in the process of scientific thinking. Finally, we will discuss how inclusivity in mentorship can help to open the path to research for all scientists. This workshop is suitable for those with prior mentoring experience, as well as those who are new to mentoring. Contact Richard Li (richard.li.rl839@yale.edu) or Nata Dudkina (nata.dudkina@yale.edu) with any questions.

Please note: Intermediate Teaching Workshops (ITWs) count toward the requirements for the CCTP. They do not presuppose any previous engagement with the topic, but will draw on topics mentioned in the Fundamentals of Teaching/the CIRTL MOOC. For a refresher on key pedagogical terms you may have encountered in the Fundamentals or the CIRTL MOOC, please refer to our glossary: tinyurl.com/PedagogicalGlossary.

This two-part workshop will be held in person on February 9th and Feburary 16th. Please note that two-part workshops count as two credits toward the Certificate of College Teaching Preparation.
