Event Description

Are you working on your Substantial Paper, SAW, or other research paper? If you think you would benefit from learning more about writing academic legal research papers, we invite you to join GWL’s three-part series on Honing Your Academic Legal Writing Skills. In this series, we will cover finding a topic and forming a thesis; organizing and drafting strategies; and revising for clarity and concision… These workshops will provide you with skills and strategies needed for your Law School writing requirements. Register for the series or any workshop of interest to you.

Part 1 (Mar. 9th): From Topic to Thesis: Entering the Academic Conversation. In this interactive workshop, we will provide you with tools and strategies for finding a topic, articulating a thesis, and connecting your research paper to ongoing scholarship. We will discuss building bridges between your research and what is being said by other scholars and professionals in the field.

Part 2 (Mar. 16th): Organizing and Drafting Strategies. In this session, we will work on organizing your paper and writing strategies. We will spend much of the time focused on effectively presenting a persuasive argument, a key component of academic writing. Come prepared to engage in activities applying the skills and techniques we discuss. After this workshop, you will understand how to organize your academic legal writing paper and write persuasively in support of your position.

Part 3 (Mar 30th): Revising and Editing for Clarity and Concision. Strong academic writing requires clear, simple expression. Yet, achieving that can be a challenge, especially when you are writing about complex legal principles and issues. Join us for this skills-based workshop where you will learn techniques to revise your paper on a macro and micro level. You will learn to assess whether your paper presents your argument in a clear, logical structure. We will also work on writing clear, concise sentences and paragraphs. You will leave this workshop understanding how to achieve clarity in your legal academic writing!
