Learning Community: Activating Objects: Teaching Across Collections (5 sessions, 10/31 to 12/5)

Event Description

What do million-year-old fossils, Italian and Persian playing cards, and a medieval French Arthurian manuscript have in common? They’re all among the 17 million objects contained in Yale’s collections that you could be using in your classes, no matter what subject you’re teaching. In this learning community, we’ll explore five different collections across campus, from the Medical Historical Library to the Yale University Art Gallery, learning how experts use these objects to motivate and inspire students across the disciplines. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to think about how you might use a range of objects, including digital reproductions, in your classroom, wherever you start your teaching career. Most importantly, we’ll consider how teaching with collections can help you make a compelling case for yourself on the market, whether you’re applying for academic jobs or conducting a broader search… . . This learning community will meet at different collections each week: . . 1. October 31st: Peabody Museum (170 Whitney Ave.). . 2. November 7th: Yale University Art Gallery (1111 Chapel St.). . 3. November 14th: The Conservation Lab (location TBD). . 4. November 21st: Yale Medical Historical Library (333 Cedar St.). . 5. December 5th: Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library (121 Wall St.) — Event Details: https://yaleconnect.yale.edu/rsvp?id=2280672
