Event Description
Do you ever doubt your accomplishments or whether you’re “”in the right place”“? Imposter stress is real and can be totalizing. It can also directly impact, and possibly even disrupt, your path to finishing your research project and other life goals. This workshop defines the concept of imposter stress and offers unique mindful & practical pre-writing and writing strategies for working through it. We will discuss related issues like perfectionism, long-term pressures to succeed, imperatives to be humble, and why scholars from historically underrepresented groups have been shown through recent research to be most vulnerable to intense feelings of imposter stress. While the workshop will acknowledge the real prevalence of this phenomenon of “intellectual self-doubt,” we will also pose the question of whether the term “imposter stress” continues to be useful for framing experiences of feeling like a fraud and/or a lack of belonging.
Intended Audience: While designed for dissertating graduate students, this event will also be helpful to professional school students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty and is geared toward all disciplines.
