Styling Your Academic Writing Workshop 5-Part Series
Just in time for Spring Cleaning, this five-part series will equip you with the tools to take your academic writing style to the next level. This interactive workshop series will offer diverse and creative methods for styling writing. We will engage with examples from academic, technical, and creative writing to get us thinking about the context of “good style.”
In Part 1 (March 2), you will learn how to clarify your meaning in complex sentences.
Part 2 (March 9) of this five-part workshop series will show you how to find “wasting words,” cut redundancies, avoid sentence sprawl, and find buried verbs.
Part 3 (March 16) will show you how to improve your logical sequence, articulate points of connection between different ideas, avoid “tripping” your reader, and using a variable set of sentence types to move your reader in the right direction. We will engage with examples from academic, technical, and creative writing to get us thinking about the context of “good style.”
Part 4 (March 23) will cover employing forceful verbs, avoiding unnecessary jargon, adding hedges and intensifiers, making wise concessions, and rethinking euphemisms - all in service of adding “good” and well-considered words!
Who knew academic writing could be so creative? Part 5 (March 30), our final session, will really get our creative juices going as we explore how to incorporate musicality, personality, and diverse stylistic innovations into our academic writing!
This series is tailored to suit the needs of graduate and professional school students and postdoctoral scholars across disciplines and years of study. Sessions are held every Tuesday in March from 4:00-5:30 PM EST over Zoom.
We encourage you to attend all sessions of the series, but you are also welcome to sign up for separate sessions.
