ATW: Assess Participation Equitably

Have you ever been left wondering how to grade students on their participation at the end of the semester? Do you want to improve your methods of eliciting and tracking participation from students? This workshop will explore concrete strategies to fairly assess participation throughout the semester, as well as the ways in which biases come into play when assessing participation. We will explore strategies to enhance and evaluate class participation at all moments of the course–defining participation for your students, what to say on the first day, keeping track of participation over the course of the semester, and the final determination of the course grade. Participants will come away from this workshop with concrete tools and ideas to improve the fairness and suitability of their participation grades.
