Yale is influenced by what happens in the world and surrounding communities. Many people are focused on the outcome of the trial of Derek Chauvin. Revisiting the death of George Floyd and reflecting on the killings of Daunte Wright and Adam Toledo, compound the trauma many have experienced throughout their lives. We have witnessed increased anti-Asian violence and mass shootings. And we’ve endured a global pandemic that has claimed millions of lives. More locally, we have also suffered the loss of Yale community members. The current moment challenges students’ abilities to focus and engage in the classroom. How can we recognize students’ emotional and social needs, while helping them to finish the semester successfully? What would success look like in these circumstances? What forms of flexibility and space can we offer in our classes and assignments? What can we do to take care of ourselves as instructors during this time? The Poorvu Center’s forum – Teaching in Context: Troubling Times – will allow instructors to gather, share strategies, ask questions, and discuss how the Yale community responds to troubling times in the classroom.
