Teaching & Learning Discussion: Interdisciplinary Teaching

Event Description

Interdisciplinary teaching can provide unique opportunities to teach our students about the relationships between our disciplines and draw important connections across disciplinary boundaries. When teaching an interdisciplinary course through co-teaching, it also models effective collaboration and collegiality for our students. However, interdisciplinary teaching can challenge students who are used to thinking about the boundaries of disciplines as sharply defined and push them to integrate the tools of one or more disciplines. Teaching across the disciplines also comes with its own administrative challenges including room choice and scheduling. How can we find creative solutions through conceptual and logistical barriers? … . Our conversation will begin with insights from Alison Sweeney, Associate Professor of Physics and of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Ali Miller, Clinician at School of Public Health; Associate Research Scientist Law School; Lecturer at the MacMillan Center; and Clinical Professor at the School of Public Health. They will share their own thoughts and pedagogical practices and then invite others into the conversation. Participants are encouraged to come ready to contribute their own questions, challenges, and variations on practices related to interdisciplinary teaching. Lunch will be provided. We are committed to hosting inclusive and accessible events that allow all participants to fully engage. Please contact us at faculty.teaching@yale.edu if there are ways we can support accommodations, be aware of any dietary restrictions, or for questions about inclusion. — Event Details: https://yaleconnect.yale.edu/rsvp?id=2290653
