Teaching & Learning Discussion: Supporting Linguistic Justice

Event Description

As instructors, how can we support and acknowledge students’ varied linguistic repertoires as valued assets in our classrooms? This lunchtime discussion will explore the teaching of linguistic justice and support instructors in thinking about ways that they can develop students’ critical awareness of the variety of choices available to them in their writing and speaking. Our conversation will begin with insights from Felisa Baynes-Ross, Associate Director of English 114 and Lecturer in English, and Claire Bowern, Professor of Linguistics & Director of Undergraduate Studies. They will share their own thoughts and pedagogical practices and then invite others into the conversation. Participants are encouraged to come ready to contribute their own questions, challenges, and variations on practices related to linguistic justice. A boxed lunch will be provided that participants can eat during the session or take away–whatever feels most comfortable. We are committed to hosting inclusive and accessible events that allow all participants to fully engage. Please contact us faculty.teaching@yale.edu if there are ways we can support accommodations, be aware of any dietary restrictions, or for questions about inclusion.. . — Event Details: https://yaleconnect.yale.edu/rsvp?id=1951164
