The Graduate Writing Lab Launches Individual Turnitin Consultations

What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is a tool to help faculty and students develop and evaluate written scholarship. It estimates the originality of written work so students can properly reference source material. The tool generates a “similarity report” by comparing an uploaded paper to a database of web pages, articles, books, and other uploaded files.

Beginning the week of October 21st, 2018, Yale will conduct a pilot to evaluate the software system across the University during the 2018-2019 academic year, to determine if it will become part of the university’s broader efforts to help students learn to be effective writers and scholars. When Can I schedule Graduate Turnitin Consultations?

Graduate Turnitin consultations take place during limited hours and only by appointment. During the Turnitin pilot period, consultations are available on the following days and times during the academic year:

  • Mondays and Fridays, 11am-1pm
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9-11am
  • Wednesdays, 4-7pm

Please note: students cannot schedule a consutlation with a GWL Writing Consultant to obtain a similarity report. Students cannot retrieve their own report. 

How can I use Turnitin?

  1. Graduate and Professional School students need to schedule an appointment with the GWL through Individual Turnitin Consultations using the WCOnline scheduling system.
  2. If you have never used Turnitin consultations, please create a new account. NOTE: If you have used GWL consutlations, but have never used Turnitin consutlations, you still need to create a new account.
  3. Choose the time that works for you and schedule a 30-min session if your draft is 50 or fewer double-spaced pages or a 1-hour session if your draft is more than 50 double-spaced pages.
  4. You will receive a confirmation email that includes instructions on how to upload your paper through Canvas by joining the class.
  5. Upload your draft using the instructions in your email before you come to the appointment.
  6. Come to the appointment to receive and discuss the report, as well as to learn about the effective practices in citation and literature synthesis.
  7. You will receive an email with a survey after your visit. Please evaluate the consultations and the software by responding to this survey.

How do I join the class to upload my draft?

1. Once you login, click the blue Enroll in Course button
2. After you enroll in the course, you can enter the course immediately, or go to your Canvas Dashboard.
3. You will be able to access this site from your Dashboard at any time during the current term. These courses will be concluded at the end of the term.
4. Submit your assignment to Canvas BEFORE your appointment time. To submit your assignment, click on the Assignments button on the left navigation, and click on the first unused assignment.
5. Click on the Submit Assignment button on the top right.
6. The assignment page will indicate that your paper will be submitted to Turnitin, but you will not see the report until you arrive at the appointment with the writing tutor.
7. You can re-submit the same paper as many times as you would like to the same assignment prior to your appointment, but only the most recent report will be reviewed during your appointment.
8. If you have different assignments you wish to have reviewed, please use a different assignment for each submission.
9. At the end of the appointment you will receive a PDF version of the reports for your review to take home.

Important Note:

During the pilot phase, a student’s use of Turnitin tutoring is confidential. The CTL will not store any paper nor will the CTL share the similarity report. We will contact students for feedback on the use of Turnitin.
