Will Johnson

McDougal Graduate Teaching Fellow
Mechanical Engineering

Will is a McDougal Teaching Fellow in the Poorvu Center.  He runs teaching workshops and learning communities for graduate students and post-docs.  Will is a PhD candidate in the Mechanical Engineering department.  His research focuses on tensegrity robots, cable-driven soft robots that can survive falling off a cliff.  Will is particularly interested in active and experiential learning, and he enjoys teaching hands-on engineering design courses.  He has been at Yale since 2020.

Before Yale, Will was the physics teacher, robotics coach, and makerspace coordinator at West Nottingham Academy, a boarding school in Maryland.  Before that, he earned his Master of Science in Engineering in Robotics and Bachelor or Science in Engineering Summa Cum Laude in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Outside of work, Will plays board games, soccer, and chess.  He also runs long distances.  His favorite spot on Yale’s campus is Bass Library on Thursday nights when the chess club meets.
