Julia Istomina

Associate Director
I support dissertation writing, publishing, public communication, and All Writes and writing retreats.

Julia is the Associate Director in the Poorvu Center’s Graduate Writing Lab team. Julia manages the programming of workshops, panel events, and writing groups and teaches workshops on topics relevant to graduate and professional communication. Julia also manages and administers the Poorvu Public Communication Certificate Program and teaches the Dissertation Writing as Practice Series. She is especially interested in helping graduate students maintain, or reconnect to, the passion they have for their writing projects and share their exciting research with various audiences. Julia has been at Yale since January 2017.

Before working at Yale, Julia taught courses in English literature, composition, and public speaking at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and earlier at The Ohio State University and Mandl College of Allied Health in NYC. Julia earned her PhD in English Literature from The Ohio State University, her MFA in Poetry from The New School Graduate Writing Program, and her Bachelor of Art from Kenyon College.

Outside of Yale, Julia enjoys trying to keep her plants alive, growing summer tomatoes, cooking, writing, singing, playing guitar, and reconnecting to the joys and tribulations of childhood through her two kids. Her favorite book is My Garden (Book) by Jamaica Kincaid, with hundreds of second favorites in the areas of fiction, poetry, and memoir.
