Writing

Communicate your ideas with clarity and impact

The Poorvu Center supports undergraduates and graduate students with all aspects of writing. The Tutors and Writing Partners in the Yale College Writing Center and the Fellows in the Graduate Writing Lab offer free, 1–1 feedback at every stage of the writing process—from prewriting to final edits. They will listen to your goals for your paper and work with you to achieve them. In addition to drop-in writing consultations in the Poorvu Center, undergraduate writers have access to scheduled meetings both in person and online. Programs for graduate students include workshops, writing retreats, and peer-review groups.

[My Writing Partner] was amazing! He provided examples of ways I could reframe my paper, and after asking me specific questions about my paper, helped me find my answers and talked me through what to change…[His suggestions] were clear and easy to follow, and he was very easy to talk to, from a writing and personal standpoint.

After my consultation I was able to strengthen the whole paper significantly—clarify convoluted sentences, sharpen my ideas and analysis, and make my writing more accessible to a non-specialized audience. [My consultant] was so encouraging but also offered a critical eye pointing out things that a reader might not understanding. That was really exactly what I needed.
