About the Writing Partners

Writing Partners

Writing Partners are undergraduate and graduate students selected for both their writing skills and their ability to talk about writing. Through working as Writing Partners, students engage in experiential learning, gaining insight to their own writing process and enjoying the satisfaction of mentoring their peers through thoughtful conversation and collaboration.

YPEI Writing Partners

We are proud to partner with the Yale College Prison Education Initiative (YPEI), whose mission of equity in higher education directly aligns with Writing Center work. Since 2021, Writing Partners from Yale’s campus have provided support during YPEI study halls. As of 2025, YPEI students are also eligible to serve as Writing Partners after completing a Peer Tutoring Practicum course. By providing friendly, conversational feedback, all Writing Partners aim to demystify the often daunting process of college writing and support students in developing confidence and independence as writers.

Becoming a Writing Partner

To become a Writing Partner, undergraduates must first be nominated by a professor or current Writing Partner. Nominees then receive an invitation to apply. Applications for Graduate Writing Partners are solicited each fall term. 

Selected applicants are invited to participate in training workshops providing an overview of best practices for effective writing tutoring that prioritizes student agency and voice. Only after completing required training can students begin working as Writing Partners.

Meet the Leads

Lead Writing Partners serve as mentors to other Writing Partners, fostering community and offering professional development opportunities through coordinating drop-in shifts, planning socials, and hosting workshops on topics such as creative writing and linguistic justice. Leads also serve as trusted student liaisons and advisors, helping administration make decisions affecting the Writing Center and the students it serves.
