Gemini LTI

Gemini LTI lets instructors add Google Gemini tools directly into a Canvas course. Through the integration, instructors can make Gems and NotebookLM notebooks available to students to engage with course materials through differentiated mediums and dedicated chat agents.

Gemini LTI is Configured for Yale Google Accounts

Users must use a Yale Eli Apps Google account. Personal / non-Yale Google accounts are not accepted and will fail to load the Gemini LTI tool in Canvas @ Yale. If you do not have a Yale Eli Apps account, please contact the ITS Help Desk or your school’s IT support service.

Why use Gemini LTI?

  • Share a Gem: a custom Gemini chatbot with instructor-provided instructions.    
  • Share a NotebookLM: a knowledge-based notebook built from Google sources.
  • Automatically adds users to the correct Google permissions when they open the Gemini item from Canvas.
    • Uses Canvas roles to determine whether someone is added as an editor or viewer.
    • Keeps Gemini activity inside the user’s Yale Google/Gemini environment.
  • Allows instructors to place Gemini links in Canvas content using the rich content editor.
  • Create course-specific AI activities, such as: 
    • A course helper or study guide.
    • A writing or revision support tool.
    • A chatbot that works from a specific knowledge base.
    •  A guided activity where students interact with a Gemini tool and submit a reflection or response back in Canvas.

Use Cases for Gemini LTI

For Educators:

  • Create content-grounded Notebooks: Import files resources directly from your LMS to use as sources in Gemini Notebook, which allows for quick set up of a study environment based on your curriculum, without the need for manual uploads.
    • Tip: Imported files are uploaded to your Google Drive and shared with students who are accessing your Gemini Notebooks and/or Gems.
  • Get student usage insights: Learn how students use you Notebooks and Gems, which includes a breakdown of how many students have opened or interacted with the Notebook or Gem.
    • Note: You will not have access / insights to the actual chats done by students with your Notebooks or Gems.
  • Create Gems for FAQs: Create custom agents to help students find answers to common questions about assignments, their weighting, and more.

For Students:

  • In-the-moment assistance: Use custom agent Gems to learn with real-time coaching.
  • Contextual learning: Study and practice is based on your lecturer’s chosen materials.
  • Learn on the go: Create podcast-like audio overviews of your course material with Gemini Notebook.
  1. Students enter Google Gemini through the Course Navigation menu.
  2. They can then click to open any available Notebooks provided by the Instructor.
  3. Or click to open any Gems the Instructor has created and shared.
