Workshops & Discussions

These workshops offer targeted, skill-building opportunities for instructors across Yale. Open to Research Associates, preceptors, and postdoctoral scholars who teach as instructors of record, these sessions cover a range of topics essential for effective teaching. Each workshop provides interactive, hands-on experiences designed to deepen understanding of specific instructional practices, with support tailored to faculty and teaching scholars at various stages in their careers.

Below, we provide descriptions for each of the workshops and discussions we offer at the Poorvu Center.

Faculty Learning Communities (Semester-long)

Semester-long Faculty Learning Communities provide faculty with an extended opportunity to delve into specific teaching topics alongside a community of peers. These groups meet regularly, allowing participants to share insights, discuss teaching challenges, and apply new strategies in their classrooms, all within a supportive, collaborative environment.

Year-long Faculty Seminars

Year-long Faculty Seminars support faculty in a deeper exploration of pedagogical strategies and themes over an entire academic year. Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Learning Communities

Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Learning Communities create a collaborative environment for emerging educators to discuss teaching methods, challenges, and successes. These communities provide an ongoing support network where participants can share resources and strategies for effective teaching in higher education.

Seminar Series for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars

The Seminar Series offers targeted discussions on advanced teaching topics relevant to graduate students and postdocs. Topics include active learning, student assessment, and fostering inclusive classrooms, providing attendees with tools to elevate their teaching effectiveness and student engagement.

Scientific Teaching Course

The Scientific Teaching Course introduces graduate students and postdocs to evidence-based teaching methods that promote student engagement and learning. With a focus on active learning, inclusive teaching, and formative assessment, this course prepares emerging scientists to create impactful learning experiences for their future students.

Equitable Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities

This workshop series explores strategies for creating inclusive and equitable classrooms within the social sciences and humanities. CIRTL Network Programs (Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars)

CIRTL Programs for graduate students and postdocs offer a range of resources and workshops designed to enhance teaching skills, promote inclusive practices, and support career development. Through CIRTL, participants gain access to a national network of educators dedicated to improving the quality of teaching in higher education.

Teaching at Yale Day

Teaching at Yale Day is an annual event that introduces graduate students who are new to teaching to the resources, support, and community at Yale. Through sessions on teaching strategies, campus resources, and networking, participants gain insights into the unique teaching environment at Yale, helping them prepare for a successful start in their teaching roles.
