Individual Workshops and Discussions

Our workshops offer targeted, skill-building opportunities for instructors across Yale. Some workshops are only open to either faculty or graduate students and postdoctoral scholars who teach, while some workshops are open to anyone who teaches at Yale. Each workshop provides interactive, hands-on experiences designed to deepen understanding of specific instructional practices, with support tailored to faculty and teaching scholars at various stages in their careers.

Below, we provide descriptions for each of the workshops and discussions we offer at the Poorvu Center.

Faculty Workshops and Discussions

Teaching and Learning Discussions (TLDs)

The Teaching and Learning Discussions (TLDs) create an open forum for faculty to discuss innovative approaches to teaching and the latest research in pedagogy. Yale instructors are recruited to serve as facilitators and lead discussions on a particular topic in teaching and learning. TLDs encourage participants to engage in meaningful dialogue about the challenges and opportunities of teaching in diverse educational settings, aiming to foster continuous improvement and inspire fresh teaching methods.

Faculty Fellows Program

The Poorvu Center Faculty Fellows Program is a yearlong initiative where faculty from diverse disciplines promote equitable teaching practices. Fellows collaborate with the Poorvu Center to lead sessions on antiracist, accessible, and equitable pedagogy, complementing the center’s educational programs. Serving as ambassadors, they provide insights to shape the Center’s future priorities and support for Yale faculty, departments, and schools.

Educational Technology Workshops

Designed to introduce and demonstrate educational technology tools, these workshops help instructors integrate technology into their courses to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. Each session covers practical applications of digital tools, ranging from course management software to interactive media and collaborative learning platforms. Attendees leave equipped to confidently implement technology in their teaching.

Antiracist Pedagogy Group

The Antiracist Pedagogy Group provides a supportive space for faculty interested in supporting antiracist policies and practices at the department and/or program level. Through discussions, case studies, and shared experiences, faculty collaborate on exploring and integrating antiracist principles into their different administrative responsibilities such as hiring, admissions, curriculum design, and other tasks that impact the department and/or program. 

Workshops and Discussions for Graduate Students & Postdoc Scholars

Fundamentals (in Teaching)

The Fundamentals series, available through the CIRTL network, introduces graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to core teaching skills, including syllabus design, student engagement, and assessment methods. These foundational workshops equip emerging educators with a strong understanding of effective, inclusive teaching practices that support student learning and success.

Instructional Teaching Workshops (ITWs) and Advanced Teaching Workshops (ATWs):

The ITWs and ATWs provide hands-on training for graduate students and postdocs, covering essential teaching skills in small, supportive group settings. Instructional Teaching Workshops focus on basic teaching techniques, while Advanced Teaching Workshops delve into specialized topics such as assessment and discipline-specific pedagogy, offering tailored guidance for aspiring educators.

Academic Job Series

The Academic Job Series helps graduate students and postdoctoral scholars prepare for careers in academia by providing insights into the academic job market. Sessions include guidance on CV and cover letter writing, interview preparation, and understanding the expectations of faculty roles, equipping attendees with tools to succeed in their job search and career development.

CIRTL Network Programs

The CIRTL Network Programs, part of the national Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning, offer resources and courses to support postdoctoral scholars and graduate students in developing effective, inclusive teaching practices. Through CIRTL, Yale instructors access courses, workshops, and discussions that enhance their ability to teach in diverse academic settings.
