Teaching & Learning Discussion: Facilitating Constructive Conversations on Challenging Topics

- Tue Nov 4, 2025 1:00 p.m.—2:15 p.m.
When topics arise in the classroom that shift the mood or noticeably cause some students discomfort, determining how to continue a generative discussion can be stressful. Whether these discussions are anticipated or happen spontaneously, there are a number of strategies and practices that can help keep the conversation moving forward while making space for students and the instructor to process sometimes powerful emotions. By facilitating these conversations effectively, instructors can: - foster a classroom community of care - support student well-being and belonging - build skills to communicate across differences - teach students to apply disciplinary lenses to critically consider current issues Our conversation will begin with insights from Zareena Grewal, Associate Professor of American Studies and of Ethnicity, Race, and Migration and of Religious Studies, and Andrea Aldrich, Senior Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Political Science. They will share their own thoughts and pedagogical practices and then invite others into the conversation. Participants are encouraged to come ready to contribute their own questions, challenges, and variations on practices related to facilitating constructive conversations on challenging topics. Lunch will be provided. We are committed to hosting inclusive and accessible events that allow all participants to fully engage. Please contact us at faculty.teaching@yale.edu if there are ways we can support accommodations, be aware of any dietary restrictions, or for other questions.
