What is a Values Statement?
A values statement is a paragraph or section in institutional, department, or course language that welcomes the range of student experiences and perspectives that they bring to the higher education setting. Instructors may use the values statement to welcome varied perspectives, set expectations for civil discourse, explain how teaching practices are meant to address the students’ learning needs, and communicate standards of engagement both within a course or discipline and surrounding controversial events. The values statement signals belief that all students belong, have value, and bring unique perspectives worthy of consideration. In a recent study, undergraduate students perceived a class climate as “warmer” if the course syllabus included a similar statement (Branch et al., 2018).
Values statements that welcome a diverse range of opinions invites connections to course material in different ways (Packard 2013). By demonstrating respect for differences in intellectual exchange, values statements support different student approaches to learning and avoid students feeling marginalized. These statements signal instructor awareness of potentially challenging campus conversations and encourage free exchange of earnest dialogue across a range of issues. The values statement is a helpful way to signal care and attention and can be used as a starting point to establishing a sense of community in the classroom and employing inclusive teaching practices.
